What is it's purpose? To run around and act silly while the real action goes on on the field? So the little children can have something to be scared of? What?

Until there is a viable, sensible replacement for Col Reb (and a stuffed shark is NOT one), there needs to be no mascot. In fact, I don't personally care if there is another on-field mascot...ever.

A shark mascot wouldn't make sense for the baseball, basketball, or women's rifle teams. I wouldn't mind it being associated with our D in the future like the Chinese Bandits or the Black Shirts.

a shark as a mascot doesn't really make a whole lot of sense but is extremely viable as a nickname for a defensive unit much like LSU's Chinese Bandits. A bear or shark could work in the same sense as an elephant (Big Al) but could be seen by some as a ripoff or contrived. A bear called Gentle Ben as an homage to Ben Williams could work but might be considered pandering to the whole race issue. Or we could just go with man-bear-pig.

It should remain a side-theme. Play it up, but not as a mascot. A black bear with a name that makes it clear it's a Faulkner reference (Old Ben, though, it may be pointed out that it doesn't necessarily make sense for Boon(e) to bring Old Ben into existence; so maybe Willie) is just the most perfect mascot imaginable. When they finally get around to getting us a new mascot, anything other than this will infuriate me.
