Buy or Sell: Mike Bianco is to OM as Nutt was to Ark? |
Lead | ||||

...maybe not to the same extent (especially with Nutt's relationship with the fans/admin. his last year) but there are obvious similarities.

but only because I think our baseball program has more national potential than Arkansas's football program, and therefore I think the expectations for our
baseball program are more warranted than the expectations for Arkansas football fans..
There are definitely some similarities though. |

Other than the fact that he's been here about 10 years (like Nutt at Arky) and the fans | #5
|
think we should be going to Omaha on the regular (like Arky fans wanting BCS games), I see no similarities. The relationship between Nutt and Arkansas became
toxic for reasons wholly unrelated to wins and losses. None of that's happening here with Bianco. I think the primary problem is that fans have nothing
else to pay attention to at this time of the year, since our hoops team hasn't been to the tourney in a while. Left to their own devices, OM fans turn
cannibalistic.

Sell....more like Mark Richt to Georgia... | #6

To me Bianco to Ole Miss baseball is what Mark Richt is to Georgia football. Consistenly really good and on the verge of greatness but never quite can get
over that hump from really good to great.

Mark Richt | #7 | ||||

has won 2 SEC titles and played in 3 BCS Bowls. Bianco has never won an SEC title and has never been to Omaha.
People say that Mark Richt isn't truly great because he hasn't won a national title. That's really all he hasn't done. Bianco hasn't done a lot of things. |

But our fanbase is starting to look as stupid as Arkansas fans did circa 2007.
I posted about what I saw during a South Alabama weekend, but it appears that we have started to play better since that date. We are 5-4 in the SEC after two road weekends with Vandy and LSU and a home series with Bama. Not great but certainly ok. If you would have said we can go 5-4 over the first three weekends, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. Right now we are missing one big bat. Sure we have other problems in our lineup and at times defensively but we are one big bat away from being a pretty damn good team, and I would have never thought that 4 weeks ago. I don't think this is a very talented team, but we are playing some damn good baseball right now. I don't think LSU is more talented than us at any level, and they are a Top 5 team, Im not sure what that makes us, but we need to start winning all of the midweek games, and get ready for a stretch run in the SEC. Despite what I thought in the beginning of the season, this team is good enough to host a Regional, something I never thought I would say this season. |

If College baseball had a system like the BCS to determine who goes to Omaha... | #12

instead of a 64 team playoff then Coach B and the boys would have been twice (05' and 06'). Its harder to make the college world series and the elite
eight in basketball than it is to make the BCS in football because of the tournament format. Coach B and Mark Richt are almost identical in resume and fan
expectation. Georgia was preseason no.1 this past year and didnt make a BCS bowl and two of the times UGA has made a BCS bowl they werent supposed to at least
according to preseason polls, just like Coach B sometimes we are better than we're supposed to be and sometimes we're worse.

We only would have been in 05. 06 we were not a national seed.
Also, you are completely ignoring the fact that Bianco has never won a SEC Championship. Richt has won two. Richt has also won the East four times. Bianco has never won the West outright. He tied LSU for it in 2005, but LSU had the tie break due to winning the season series. Bianco is much closer to Nutt than Richt. The only knock on Richt is that he has never won a national title. Bianco doesn't even have an outright division title. If we expect the same things out of Bianco that UGA fans do out of Richt, we're the ones being stupid. Richt has proven he can reach much greater success than Bianco has proven. We're setting ourselves up to be disappointed. We still stand a solid chance at winning the SEC or making it to Omaha, but we are never going to do that at the same frequency that UGA is going to do it in football under Mark Richt. I still think Stansbury is the best comparison, although he does have an outright SEC title.

RebelBruiser wrote:...what do they put in the water in Oxford? Why in the hell would your baseball program have more potential than Arkansas's football program? Are you serious? I did a quick google, and assuming wiki is correct, you haven't won a conference championship in baseball since 1977. Yet you have more potential than an all-time top 20 football program? You guys are truly delusional. |

Arkansas football is a top 20 all time program???? Based on what..
The hogs are 29th all time in win %. The hogs have a GRAND TOTAL OF 1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! (thats right I said ONE) The hogs have zero SEC championships. (yes, I know you won the SWC a few times) So you want to talk about expectations (which are based on what you have done lately, if you haven't won anything in over a decade such as ARK football you should not have national championship expectations).... OM baseball has been one game or two games away from the CWS three of the last four years and only four teams have been to as many super regionals as OM in the last four years. SO YES our expectations in baseball should be greater than the hogs in football. |

All-time really doesn't matter today. If it did, we'd be the same football program we were back in Vaught's day. Things change.
Arkansas is now in the SEC, and your program is 7th in the SEC in my eyes in terms of potential. That's a long uphill climb to try to win a championship. Our baseball program has been one of the most consistent programs in the conference, and we've been consistently Top 15 or 20. Also, our baseball program, today, is much closer to being a national program than Arkansas's football program. And that's exactly the problem that most Arkansas fans have. They seem to think that if they just hire the right coach, they'll be able to be the next USC, Florida, or Texas. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't work that way. |
