You are right, partially. The boosters were the ones actually ponying up, but I know someone who was invited to a booster meeting, held with the coaches, where they basically outlined who their top targets were and what exactly they would need to do for them to make them happy. They gathered boosters to basically have a recruiting fundraiser, so it wasn't just a few rogue boosters. It was an organized action targeted at the recruits the coaches wanted.

I'll agree that Brewer was doing what he had to do, and he really wasn't doing anything that wasn't happening everywhere. However, it was going on, and it was an organized cheating effort.

I agree with you, and I don't blame him for doing what he had to do, and I don't blame him for doing what was the norm across the SEC at the time.

At this point, it's all water under the bridge to me. Fortunately, we followed the probation with probably the best hire we've made in any sport in a long time, bringing in Tuberville. We were on a crippling probation, and Tuberville worked a miracle to get us to a bowl game in the first year after the bowl ban was lifted. He resurrected our program immediately after a probation that could've been a death blow to a struggling program. For that reason, despite the way he left us, I'm still grateful to Tuberville. Had we made a weak hire following the probation, we could've found ourselves in a tailspin as a program with enough losing seasons in a row that Eli doesn't come to Ole Miss, and we may still be in a rut. Instead, we got out of that rut quickly, and we put together 7 straight winning seasons, which got us back probably stronger than we were before the probation.
