Posts: 764 May 4, 2009 10:30 AM	Tags : None I'll start by saying that I'm obsessive about travel. A few years ago when I visited my 50th state I was asked "What's next?". I hadn't really thought about that, but the first things that came to mind were 'Every country in Europe' and 'Every county in my home state of Mississippi'. I'm almost halfway there on the Europe thing and after counting, I think I have been to 63 of the 82 Mississippi counties. I'm going to take an upcoming weekend to knock out some of the remaining MS counties. I ask you with knowledge of south and central MS, which towns are worth seeing in the counties marked in red on this map? And no, I'm not expecting any incredible cities or a tourist dream, but these are still parts of my native state, and I would like to have a little better first-hand knowledge...

Bay Springs has a nice brick street downtown area with old store fronts and such. 10 miles north of there on 15 is Montrose, where the family is from. Has a very nice old, large White House on the west side of 15. Other than that, I cant think of much else in Jasper County. Wilkinson County is the home of Woodville which is the approximate location that DeSoto held the first Catholic Mass in America, or so says a friend of mine from there. Amite County has the site where Lynard Skynards plance crashed. I think there is a plaque or memorial but not certain.

Then, drive down the road to Woodville and visit Illusions (also known as the "Woodville Ballet") on 61 just south of town. They have a one-legged dancer.

That would probably be entertainment enough. All I know about Jeff Davis county is that it is home to Bassfield which has a Ward's, and Ward's is the greatest fast food burger place in the South. Your favorite sports team scores a game tying point, you find a dollar in the street, you see someone you hate get their ass kicked in public, all of these blissful moments deserve, nay, demand the most communal of public displays of pleasure: The Landshark.

There isn't much in Noxubee, on the other side of the state, either, except for a nice Mennonite bakery on the side of the highway in Brooksville. I guess could come in handy if you were in an urgent need Clarke Co - someone else mentioned Dunn's Falls, which is nice, but was a hell of a lot more fun before the State made it into a park. Lots of alcohol consumed there back in the day, slipping on the rocks and the falls. Jones Co. - do the Sheriff's cars still have "Free State of Jones" painted on the side? Lauren Rogers Museum is interesting, has the worlds second smallest basket. By writing this, I think I understand why they've been put off to last on your quest.

There's also Rosemont, which was Jefferson Davis' family home. You can base yourself in Natchez, which has plenty of interesting things. Don't ever worry about being "retardedly optimistic." Posts: 1141 May 4, 2009 11:51 AM Registered Member	For Noxubee Coounty about the best thing would be the Noxubee Refuge, it is 48,000 acres with some pretty good trails and several large lakes. http://www.fws.gov/noxubee/ Also on the refuge is a place called "The Cajun Cabin" http://www.thecajuncabin.com/ damn good crawfish, etc.... I think they are located in Winston County though. You could also check out site where the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit was signed and the Blues Marker for Willie Earl King, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater, and Carey Bell. "The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are."

Also, Bogue Chitto in the western part of Walthall can be fun if you have people with you. Walthall county had the most dairies in the state for a long time. Over 150 just twenty years ago. I think they still have the most, but it's pretty much a moot point as that practice has dropped off like balls. There're around 30 left. One town east is Columbia. Pretty cool little place. It was the state capital for almost a year, or something. A shit load of people over there made fortunes with bootleg whiskey and wildcatting for oil a long time ago. I think a lot of those family fortunes wound up in the hands of Bernie Ebbers. Whoops. Anyway, it's on the Pearl River, which might be the most dangerous river in the fucking world for its size. I've had/seen plenty of close calls on that bastard.

Posts: 18 May 4, 2009 1:13 PM	Go to Noxubee Co. and hang out and drink with locals while riding the back roads which are all gravel. There are no longer any bars in Macon anywhere due to the number of fights at the last one, but there are some out in the county (Sandy Land Road), but you wouldnt want to take any ladies there and you may not want to go either. There is no law in the county, so drinkin and driving is ok. Night hunting is pretty good, but be prepared to drink a lot. The Menonite Bakery in Brooksville is real good, and thats about all for Nox. Co. unless you like catfish ponds, farming, hunting and fishing. There is a saw mill in Shuqualak if that interest you.

Scott County sucks - the entire county smells like chicken shit. Sorry to offend those of you from Morton or Forest but I used to have to work around there in the summers and it sucked ass. Edited to add - I've been to every county in the state on numerous occasions. Greene and George are the weirdest/scariest, followed closely by Jasper (once you get outside of Bay Springs) and Jones (once you are outside Laurel).
