Posts: 460 May 18, 2009 10:26 PM	Tags : None Last night I posted a George Carlin skit and a State fan trashed it only because of Carlin's liberal views. So, here's the question: Have the political views of an actor or director in any way ever affected your decision to watch or listen to them? Take Bill Maher, Mel Gibson or Michael Moore for instance. Or, put another way, has the political stance of a TV series or movie ever caused you not to watch it? In this instance, take West Wing, Chariots of Fire or Born on the Fourth of July, for examples. I can't think of a single instance where I didn't watch something because of the political views of someone associated with a film or television show.

Posts: 4458 May 18, 2009 10:32 PM	I'll say that if I don't agree with a show or movie's premise, there is a good chance I won't watch it. But it's not some form of boycott. It's just that if the show or movie takes a specific stance on something that I disagree with, I'm probably not going to enjoy it enough to either sit through the whole thing or watch it weekly. I can't say that personal political views from certain actors haven't ever turned me off to their stuff. However, I'll say that I do find Tom Cruise a little creepy these days based in large part on the scientology shit. Most religions are based on some pretty out there ideas I know, but something about scientology seems a little bit further out there. I'll still watch his movies, but I will say that I'm a little bit less inclined to pick out his movies, not out of some stance against him, but just because I think he's a little bit of a nutbag.

I also like most Sean Penn movies, even that guy's way far left as well. Your favorite sports team scores a game tying point, you find a dollar in the street, you see someone you hate get their ass kicked in public, all of these blissful moments deserve, nay, demand the most communal of public displays of pleasure: The Landshark.

One semester they thought DC cover of "Landslide" was the best and the very next semester they grumped and groaned. So, from my perspective, the students definitely were judging the music based on politics of the group. I had to ask what the hell the political views of the group had to do with their cover of a 20 year old Fleetwood Mac song. No one could/would answer that question. My biggest issue with him is that he acts as some kind of champion for the average American (calling Republicans the "party of plutocrats" and supporting liberal stances on labor, taxation, etc.) but makes a point to bash the average American as much as he can.

However, when their political views seem to become part of their usual routine i.e. George Carlin constantly involving his radical liberal views as a fair portion of his comedy routine then I will not watch it. I'll listen to most any liberal musicians because they USUALLY don't involve too much of their political views in their songs and to be honest most musicians (except country musicians) are libs anyways. I mean last night Dane Cook was talking about voting for Obama but he moved along and didn't get too political so I kept watching and thought it was hilarious. http://saddawg.blogspot.com/

I don't watch any Moore stuff, but that's because of the movie itself, not him. I did think Doogie being gay would affect his characters, but I still like Barney on How I Met Your Mother. I think Cruise is a whackjob too, but I don't care.

I'd prefer my entertainment, including sports, be void of political overtones, but that's not the way of the world today. Everyone seems hell-bent on showcasing their opinions. So fuck it, I'll just continue to ignore it. Less stressful that way.

Posts: 4879 May 19, 2009 8:47 AM	If the actor or actress, through their own antics, become such big lightning rods that I can no longer focus on the character that they're trying to play, then yes I'll avoid their movies or shows. For instance, all I can think of when I see Tom Cruise is "That's Tom Cruise - crazy guy". I can't focus on any character that he's trying to play because he's just become too much of a distraction for me. So I've learned to avoid his movies. Same with Susan Sarandon. Same with Mel Gibson. On the flip side, I can watch Sean Penn and still enjoy his acting. Even though he's been vocal in his political feelings, he just hasn't risen to the level of annoyance that it overshadows his acting. Probably because his acting is at such a high level in my opinion. And that's all subjective so it will vary with each person.
