And yes, I'm taking it in this morning. Just curious as to what it could possibly be. It needs a new belt, tune up, oil change etc, so I'm gonna get all that done while they look. Luckily I'm under extended warranty if it's anything bad.

ask NAFOOM: Smoke coming from ye olde tailpipe |
Lead | ||
|
Yesterday after work a big cloud of smoke came from my tailpipe when I started it. Went away quickly. Happened again this morning. Didn't happen when
I started it last night. So, apparently it has to sit somewhere for quite a while to accumulate. Would that mean oil leaking somewhere? It comes from the
tailpipe, not the engine.

smoke means burning oil, usually | #1

it could be leaking from you rear main seal but you would most likely see some on the ground too if that were the case. Seals on the pistons cold be an issue
also.
Edited to say: I am by no stretch a mechanic but speak from experience with an old Ford Bronco.

If it's not running hot, most likely valve seals.

If its black smoke, more than likely its carbon build-up in the throttle body causing your car to smoke. Replace the throttle body and you should be good.
Also, it should be covered under your ext. warranty.

how much smoke? | #10 | ||
|
White smoke is water (or coolant). Could be intake gasket leak or even head gasket leak. If it is just a small amount of smoke I would lean toward intake
gasket but truthfully it could be either one. There are also other reasons coolant can get into the combustion chamber but those are the most common.

a leak from the rear main seal would only be that... | #11

a leak. Oil would not be getting into the combustion chamber due to rear main seal leak.

blue or black smoke is burning oil | #14

A slight leak from my head gasket on my truck + a bottle of Stolli + Sardis Lake ended up with me filling my radiator with lake water and a $4000 trip to Kenny
Warren.
Sounds like an intake or head gasket leak to me, given the white smoke. |

Sounds like it might be an intake gasket leak. Many vehicles are prone to intake leaks, especially GM products. It is probably burning coolant constantly while
it is running but the amount is too small to produce any noticeable smoke. When the vehicle is turned off the cooling system is still under pressure (for a
while until it cools down) and coolant is still leaking into the cylinders. This means there is an accumulation of coolant in the system during initial start
up causing the smoke that you see. Might want to make sure and check your coolant level to make sure you do not allow your vehicle to run hot.
