It appears Sen. Wicker thinks broadcasters can regulate themselves. Anyone got any pull with his off to tell him to get on board?

There is a move before Congress to lower the volume of TV commercials that are purposely loud. Here is a link

Maybe I take this whole "liberty" thing a little too seriously, but there are plenty of things that | #5

are annoying as shit that are also none of the government's goddamned business. This is the exact same mindset that leads to the bullshit that the
government does that you don't like - liquor laws and fucking with college football, to be specific to this board. It's just different people annoyed
by different shit, and as long as we have the mindset that it's the government's job to fix anything that bothers us, we'll keep on having all the
bullshit laws, from t.v. commercial volume regulations to room temperature beer.

and sometimes I just want to put the TV on. No DVR, no Tivo nothing but seeing what is on and vegging out for a half hour or so. I really rarely watch TV and I
don't mind commercials. I do consider it stepping on my liberties when ad companies use our collective airways to blast me off the couch.
While I really don't want this to be my government's only job I don't mind when enough of us band together and say, "Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't get yelled at by our own tvs? Much the same as when everyone got tired of sales calls during dinner, thus the no call list. (Bet you are on it.) That is government protecting my liberties by curtailing in an insignificant manner commercial non-protected speech. Plus when they are focusing on crap like this I think they are less likely to screw up the important stuff. BTW Bo Elliott is a good Rebel. I am going to mention to him his commercials are loud. There is a great example of one person thinking something is okay because to me it is kind of funny to see how small his kids used to be. I bet his company had nothing to do with the volume. |

The FCC already regulates television and radio and Supreme Court cases.... | #7

have held that Congress can regulate broadcasts that are transmitted into homes (George Carlin and the seven dirty words); like it or not, there is the
emergency broadcast system and all kinds regulations already in place.

What makes them "our" airwaves? | #8
|
The government seized control of the right to broadcast at certain frequencies, and they demand and are paid huge bribes from broadcasters for that right. You
bought a tv specifically designed to display the signals that are then sent out on those frequencies. The networks own the content, and they own the equipment
used to send the signal on the frequency on which they've paid huge sums to broadcast. They have a right to send out whatever signal they want, derived
from the fact that they own it. You have the right to tune your television to pick up any signals on any frequency you want, derived from the fact that you own
your tv.
Your liberties haven't been stepped on until someone fucks with your rights, which are derived from ownership. You do not have a right to control what signals are broadcast on what frequencies just because you own a device capable of picking up those signals. Lots of laws get passed because enough of us band together and say, "wouldn't it be nice if..." People in Oxford once said "wouldn't it be nice if we had fewer drunks running around town," and they passed alcohol laws. People in Utah said "wouldn't it be nice if we had a shot at a college football national championship," and they had they're Congressmen push for federal laws requiring a playoff. It may not seem like a big deal on some of the little shit, but the mindset that allows for this also allows for much worse and much more serious stuff, and if you don't attack that mindset, there is no mitigating the extremes to which it can be taken.

I'm not arguing whether it would hold up in court; I'll concede that right now. | #9

My point is that it's bullshit.
