Nafoom Question: Where do you set your thermostat? |
Lead | ||
|
I like mine at around 71-72. Anything higher than that and I can't sleep at night.

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists
who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'. Kurt Vonnegut, Timequake, 1997

Set it on 70 at night with the fan running above. Keep it on 73 during the day.
I have a programmable thermostat & rarely ever even have to mess with it. It is kind of a bitch when seasons change, but overall it's easy to set and operate. Yea, I'm screwed with Cap n Trade deal if passed. I have no problem if Obama wants to keep his office 78 degrees, but by damn if I want to keep it at fucking 60 don't punish me for it!!

I like to sleep with it frigid. And a fan on. But warmer if I'm in the recliner | #2
|
I think it's right below a vent. Doesn't matter anyway, it's over 80 in my house in the afternoon regardless of the setting.

That's fucked up | #3 | ||

I have the same problem, my AC is one of those shitty ones designed only to keep it 20 degrees cooler that the outside temp. It's fine except for when it
gets over 95 degrees which is June 1 to about Sept 15. My thermostat stays on 73 throughout the summer but from about noon til 6 pm it's 80 degrees in the
house.

However regarding your question my wife actually slays air conditioner units, it's like the fricking winter here all the time. The cap and trade bill
would put me in the poor house.

But my unit is evidently pretty efficient. I keep the thermostat on 74 and it's comfortable in my house. I also run ceiling fans throughout the house in
the summer to help circulate the air.
I use a timed thermostat that, when no one is home, runs at 80 and then drops to 74 at 2:30. It's cool by the time I get home at 4:50.

You should monitor your | #8

ventilation if your house will not get cool in the afternoons. You can get a USB temp/humidity logger or just use a regular thermometer to monitor it between
those hours. Depending on when your house was built, most contractors don't give two shits about attic ventilation. They put a couple of whirly-gigs up top
or just use the rigde vents where it seems appropriate. The ridge vents look good, but I have found that they are not really good for ventilation.
If you attic gets above 150 degrees (F) in the afternoon, it does not have proper ventilation. There are a couple of options, you can get electrical exhaust fans installed, they are ususally about 200$ but then you gotta pay to have them wired into your attic. With them being electric, you really don't realize any energy savings....just a more comfortable home. You can also opt for the solar attic fans that are popular now. Most anyone can install them and it is just a matter of securing it to your roof and off it goes. It has a thrermoswitch that starts it up at 70 degrees and it runs off the sun.....good energy savings, plus you can write the cost off on your taxes up to 40% I believe. The downside to the solar ones are the price. They are usually about 500$. Both methods should take your attic to ambient +~10-15 degrees, which will take a lot of pressure off your A/C and make it much cooler in the afternoons. IF you own your home, this is something you should look into. If you rent, screw it....just move. |

my house has good ventilation, but there's only so much the unit can do | #9

when it's 105. I've considered going on the roof to put tin foil over the skylights. That would probably help right?

How big is your house? | #10
|
Unless it's huge, it sounds like you probably have either an undersized or an outdated A/C. Of course, if you're renting, not nuch you can do about
that.

We need an "anything goes" board. | #11

Sometimes it would be good to blow off steam about politics, religion, etc. but still be able to cuss and also not have to go to sites that are strictly
political. Those seem to be full of people who eat, sleep, and breathe politics, and I don't think that describes most on here. Sometimes it's good
to talk about that stuff with people who are as ill-informed as I am.

That would help, or if you | #12
|
can reach the skylights from inside, go to lowes, buy a sheet of perma-R board and cut it out to fit the inside of the skylight and put it up there (foil side out). |

If it is easy enough | #14 | ||

to get to that would help. I was just thinking about securing it on the outside. High Winds would probably rip it off. Perhaps just put the foil on the inside.
I know your pain. My first house was like that, I have just enough OCD in me to where that ruined my summers. That was all I could think about and it pissed me off to no end. |
