I'm a huge Michael Mann fan, so I went to it tonight. It was pretty damn good and thoroughly enjoyable.

We all left wondering what the purpose of the movie was. I was really looking forward to it, and it kind of fell flat. However, i would love for you to change
my mind because I would love to really like it.
1.)what was the point of the whole thing? fbi, or john dillinger? 2.)how truthful was it to the actual story?

Depp and Bale were great but the rest of the cast was pretty lame IMO. They didn't really do a whole lot to make the story very compelling either.

Reading the book right now | #3
|
the "point" is to detail the crime spree of the early 30's and how it transformed the FBI into it's current state. Hard to believe all that
crazy shit went on in the US just over 70 yrs ago....I mean "wild west" crazy- except these guys were armed w/ heavy & sub-machine guns. And the
book is the most researched report on that time period, so it's as accurate as can be...not sure about the movie. I'm sure it deviates somewhat.

I went in thinking it was going to be somewhat of a bio of Dillinger. I had read a few things about Dillinger before seeing it, so I was somewhat familiar with his life, but enjoyed the movie being a movie that simply follows dillinger through his life starting in 1933. I didn't expect it to be a plot driven movie about gangsters trying to figure out how to rob this bank or that train. So in that context, i wasn't let down, because it's not what I expected. 2.)how truthful was it to the actual story? I thought it was pretty accurate. They had to cut some stuff out and tweak the parts of the story to make it flow a little better in the time allotted, but overall it was pretty realistic. I noticed that alot of people didn't like Miami Vice when Michael Mann did it because he didn't sensationalize the movie so much, with huge explosions and tons and tons of gun fire ala Michael Bay or Bruckheimer, but it was more realistic. I enjoyed that type of movie, but it's not for everyone. |

Was it a Dillinger biopic or the history of the early FBI? Overall, it came up really short.

but lord knows it wasn't good.
Well, I think I'll get saddled up and go looking for a woman. . . . Shouldn't take more than a couple of days.
I'm not picky. As long as she's smart, pretty, and sweet, and gentle, and tender, and refined, and lovely, and carefree...

Probably the worst movie that I've ever seen in a theater since Battlefield Earth. | #8
|
It was worse than Year One, it was just that bad. I dozed off in the middle of the movie. The pacing was absolutely horrible. Should have been an hour and a
half, not two and a half hours.
Johnny Depp was horrible. I mean, absolutely horrible. His lines sounded like they were written for Jack Sparrow and he couldn't pull them off without sounding goofy. Christian Bale wasn't much better. If Mann had any sense, he would have reversed their roles. Again, one of the worst movies I've seen in the theater in a really long time. So much wasted potential. The ending was just pitiful. |

even though I haven't seen Public Enemies yet, it was not worse than Year One. Year One is the worst movie ever made...ever.

Guys like Black and Ferrell make it big and then don't seem to be able to say no to any script. | #11
|
Is it greed, or do they just believe they have the ability to make ANY movie funny just by being in it?

times. I like Harold Ramis' stuff a whole lot though.

The script was written by Harold Ramis. He wrote Animal House, Groundhog | #13

Day, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, etc...It's not like he's some hack and they jumped at the movie for the money.

you can't really fault them for wanting to cash in while still popular but my God man Year One was easily the worst thing I've ever seen and Ferrell
has gone downhill since Old School and really it was Vince Vaughn that made that movie to me.

I sat there and played on my iPhone for over half the movie. It was really just not watchable. There was one line that made me laugh...something about holy
of holy and his poley of poley. Other than that it was just garbage. And I'm not very critical most of the time. I wouldn't accept that DVD for free
cause it would just clutter my house. And I love collecting DVDs.

If you don't like the movie, leave. But if I choose to stay, I don't want to be distracted by your glowing telephone screen. Turn it off, please.
