I've Never Understood The Point Of The Offside Rule In Soccer

I have been a soccer fan ever since I lived in Scotland for a couple of years. Never understood the point of this rule. If a striker gets in behind the
defense, the other team fails to mark him, and his team is able to feed him the ball ....... why should it be a foul? And if there is any type of borderline
call, it's almost always flagged.
This rule is the only thing keeping soccer from exploding in the US. Dropping that rule would make it a fast paced exciting game to watch. Can you imagine
this rule being in basketball? No break away dunks or back down cuts. No brilliant feeds to open players in the low post.
Of course the rule has been around for 100 years, so there's no way they are gonna get rid of it.
I agree that it would make for a faster paced game, but I think soccer was designed for comfort more than speed. Hockey has that icing bullshit (Godfrey?)
which I think is similar, and as you know, it keeps people from "snowbirding." I disagree that "this rule is the only thing keeping soccer from
exploding in the US." There are many things keeping soccer from exploding here, and honestly, I wouldn't even put the offsides rule in the top 5.
You're right, though, it's not going anywhere.
hockey has "touch-up" offsides and removed the line at center ice to nullify the "two line pass" rule in an attempt --a successful one--to
open up the game and scoring. And I'd say offsides rules are to prevent fuckers from cherry picking...
If players were allowed to go anywhere the want, goalies would look like pussies.

I'm sure there is a way to reconstruct the rule where you still would outlaw cherry pickin', but eliminate the offside trap that defenses use.
There's nothing gayer than an offside call coming off a pass from inside the goaltenders box.
The only thing(s) keeping soccer from being really, really popular in the US are the lack of scoring and the constant diving. You're never gonna get an
American to spend 2+ hours watching a game that consistently ends in a nil-nil tie. If the scores were closer to hockey, baseball, or lacrosse, you'd get a
lot more interest. You also have to get to the point where each time a player with the ball is challenged, he doesn't wind up rolling around on the ground
as if his leg has been snapped in half.

I do understand the icing rule. If they didn't have it then defenders would simply smack the puck all the way down the ice every time it came into
their defensive zone. The game would be unwatchable without it. Just two teams smacking the puck the length of the ice the entire game. Icing actually
increases offense.
all game, like in lacrosse. Might as well divide up the field and say who can go where. There would be no fast breaks really, or whatever they call them in
soccer. I played for 10 years, and was a referee for about 5. It makes sense if you really know soccer.
is when it's called over a matter of a few inches, and really could be called either way. More often than not, when offsides is called, it's completely
arbitrary.
A forward 5 yards ahead of the backers is one thing, but when it comes down to the length of the striker's nose to decide if offsides is called, it makes
for a dull match.

1. It has to compete with football, baseball, and basketball.
2. Scoring is minimal, and games often end in a tie.
3. There's more flopping in soccer than in the WWE. We don't like pansy athletes in America.

Second, I would say that there is no offsides in the offense's 1/3 of the field closest to the goal but you had to stay out of the smaller box around the
goal. In that box, offsides would still apply. Or perhaps a 5 yard "grace period" would be established by me, that you have to be offsides by more
than 5 yards to be actually offsides. But that would become a big judgement call for the refs to make, so that might not work either.
Third, I announce low sodium Dales as the official marinade of soccer and bacon would be sold at all matches for $12 a strip.
