I'm not much of a judge, but that's what I think at least.
I've always heard that, if you can't run with the big dogs, you should stay on the porch. My question is, why does one's
inability or lack of desire to run with big dogs confine him to the porch? Why shouldn't such a man be allowed to roam the rest of the house or even go for
a nice walk in the park?

I was not a big fan of Traning Day, though. I thought it was a pretty average flick. His acting in Glory was one of his best ever.

but they are all way past their primes. Saying they are the greatest actor alive is like saying Willie Mays is the greatest baseball player alive. It may be
true in a literal sense, but its obviously not the context of the discussion.
Outside of Daniel Day Lewis and maybe Russell Crowe, Denzel is as good as anyone we named in this thread. I think Johnny Depp deserves a mention. He is very versatile. The guy can play almost anyone and pull it off. |

John Turturro is a very good actor and always fascinating to watch. He can play the menacing guy, the likable guy, or the buffoon equally well.
I'm also a Christian Bale fan. Any guy who will do what he did to his body for The Machinist is dedicated to his craft. He was outstanding in Harsh Times - the movie was just too damn depressing.

Denzel's pretty good | #16

but for every memorable movie he stars in, it seems like he appears in 3 or 4 mediocre ones (inside man, john q, deja vu, american gangster). Can't blame
him though he's probably getting close to 20 mil per.

And I'm sure I haven't seen a few of his other movies, especially older ones. The recent ones, that I have seen, it just seems like he always plays
strong, confident bold black man. Like the strong, confident, bold black coach, or the strong, confident, bold black detective, or the strong, confident, bold
black gangster.

No love for Tom Hanks? | #18
|
2 time Academy Award winner, and should have won hands down for his Capt. John Miller portrayal in Saving Private Ryan, and possibly should have won for
Castaway.
To me, no American actor "in his prime" is as versatile as Hanks. If we want to talk about actors only in their prime, I've got to give the nod to Jack Nicholson. Chinatown, The Shining, Cuckoos Nest, Terms of Endearment, The Last Detail, Prizzi's Honor, Batman, As Good As It Gets, A Few Good Men, Broadcast News. Hard to beat that line-up as far as acting is concerned. |

No matter how right you are about oil prices... | #19

You're bad wrong about that. His character was rich and the story was compelling, but Hanks didn't do anything special with the role. There are tens
of other actors who would have played that role and you wouldn't have lost a thing with the story.
Roberto Begnini won, because unless you have less depth than a shot glass and play a Holocaust victim (Life is Beautiful), you're the front runner in all Oscar contests, but Ed Norton should have taken home a statue for getting swole, having fake tats, and curbing dudes in American History X. That was a performance.
Under the the Jackie Sherrill inspired cloak of a clown's costume, Brother Dwayne looks down upon a hope filled Grove, all the while mixing a menacing cocktail of pity and spite to douse on an unsuspecting fan base. |

I thought he owned that role | #20
|
And, I loved the subtleties he brought to the part.
However, having said that, Ed Norton in American History X was Oscar worthy as well. And I will forever believe that Begnini won because the actors who vote for Best Actor simply were not going to give Hanks three Oscars in that short of a time frame. |
