Yeah, and look what that color brought MSU. It didn't amount to any more wins than a red coach, brown coach, or white coach. Get off the frickin' "We gave the opportunity to the first african american coach in the SEC..." We'll keep coach Pete. Your school can go off and find another social cause to champion, and we'll keep winning. Maybe you could hire the first Homo coach in the SEC. |

Here is what I don't get about the Peterson thing | #7
|
He has won at Boise State. Big fucking deal. So did Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins. Now look what they both did when they moved on to BCS schools.
Koetter was something like 26-10 while at Boise, and moves on the AZ State. There, he goes 34-30, and 21-28 in PAC 10 play. Not exactly world beating numbers. Then Hawkins takes over in Boise. 53-11, and 37-3 in the WAC. Granted, these are good numbers anywhere, but again, it's the fucking WAC. So, Mr. Hawkins moves on to CO, a once proud football program that he is brought in to restore. CO plays in the Big 12, a very good conference. Mr. Hawkins proceeds to go 13-24, and 8-16 in Big 12 play. Keep in mind, he gets to play Iowa St, Baylor, TX A&M, Kansas State, etc.....while playing in the Big 12. So, the last two guys who got it done were less than average at mid-tier BCS schools, in much weaker conferences than the SEC, and both were still in the West/Midwest recruiting where they had ties. So, MS State believes that the third time is the charm, I guess. Forget the fact that his predecessors have failed miserably after leaving Boise, that Peterson will be coaching in the toughest conference of the three, and he will be recruiting a completely different area. All of this, and they are willing to pay him over $2 million. Seems to me they could make a better hire than that....hell, even a good assistant or a solid MAC coach for less money seems like it would be a better hire. |

Wow, just went over to the Pack. You'd think someone shot Bully. They spent all day fellating Peterson, sure they had him, and they got their bubble burst.
Edited to add: If you're Peterson, why would you leave for MSU anyway? I'm sure they offer you a significant raise, but I don't think it'd be desirable for Peterson (yes I realize that Peterson doesn't know how to spell his own name). Point being, you're something like 35-3 at Boise. You inherited a program that was already built and rolling, and you're in a position where you are likely to continue rolling for however long you'd like. The way I see it, you have two choices: 1. Take a significant raise from MSU and inherit a rebuilding job (something you've never done), which is also a risk to your coaching career considering that you are young. Negatives: If you don't accomplish the rebuilding job, you have to go back to square one with your career. 2. Stay at Boise. Keep winning 10+ games a year with the occasional BCS buster year. Keep your name as one of the hot commodities on the market, and wait for a more ideal job to come along. Basically, if you're Peterson, you can wait it out and take your pick of jobs with no urgency to move.

I was hoping they got him instead of Turner Gil... | #9

I think Gil is going to be a very successful head coach. He would be a great hire for AU or MSU.
I would rather both schools miss out on him. |

I think they're going to have the same problem with Gill as they had with Petersen. | #10
|
As Bruiser said, I think the prime inhibitor is that it's a tough rebuilding job and, if they lose, it will severely damage their career. I guess the
jury's still out on former BSU/current Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, but you know Petersen had to look at Hawkins' lack of success there (an easier place
to win than MSU) and wondered if the same would happen to him at MSU. Petersen and Gill are in good spots now -- they can stay until a prime job comes along.
I knew when I ran into Greg Byrne in the club level and he was carrying chairs from one side to the other that this guy would be good. Shaschboy, sixpackspeak.com |

Exactly. Hawkins is a prime case of a guy who was a HUGE name a few years back. Then he took on a tough rebuilding job at Colorado, and you don't hear a
lot about him anymore. That's what coaches have to worry about, regardless of how much they are going to get paid.
I think most coaches see MSU as a rebuilding job in the toughest conference in America. When you throw in the fact that you have to compete with Saban, Petrino, Miles, Nutt, and sometimes Meyer, Richt, and Spurrier, it's a big time challenge, and it's a big risk. That's also why I think Auburn will struggle with their hire as well. Not only do you have to go in and compete with Richt and Saban for recruits and for your biggest rivalries, but you're following up Tommy Tubberville who won a whole bunch and still got fired. I know they'll pay a lot, but a young up and coming coach may see it as career suicide. |

Maybe he can.... | #16 | ||

Im not saying he won't be a good hire. Maybe he will. The point is, that I don't see the hoopla over him, when there are other qualified guys that
understand the landscape of the SEC(cheating and football is king), has never recruited here(again, cheating and boosters), and has rode the coattails of what
Koetter and Hawkins built. He isn't walking into a guaranteed conference championship like he did in Boise. In fact, he is working at the other end of
the spectrum. I ask you this....assuming Boise and State have similar athletes, could his team now at Boise win more than 2-3 games in the SEC? I don't
think they could. In fact, Im not sure they could beat State or Kentucky.
It's just a different brand of football. Why not bring in a high quality DII coach like the guy at UNA, DSU, etc....it worked for Ohio St., and at least they would have contacts in this area. |

No successful head coach from another will come to MSU because of the reasons stated above. Bank on it.
They will have to hire an OC who really wants to be a HC. I'm glad Dan Mullen's name has not been mentioned.

Petersen
Whether or not he takes the Mississippi State job may depend on $$$ and the opportunity to compete in the SEC. It may ultimately come down to his priorites and values. I'm a MSU alumnus. I would love to have him come to Starkville. If he doesn't, we will no doubt hire a very good coach. We gave the opportunity to the first african american coach in the SEC, and gave him more time than any major university would have. We need a great coach and believe that Petersen would be a great "fit."
