Posts: 12 Apr 30, 2009 10:39 AM	I did not go to the Lyric show because I'm currently unemployed and can't justify even spending $5 right now to see band. While I completely understand the band being annoyed by people not paying attention, they should be thanking their lucky stars that there are "rich" frat daddies willing to pay $35 -- TO NOT EVEN LISTEN TO THEM. My God, how I wish people thought enough of me to come be in the same room as me for $35 for a couple hours. For this reason I find Tweedy's roll pretty dumb. But here's what I also was reminded of. When Wilco played at the Ford Center a few years ago, I went. Before the show started, I went to the merch table. There was a cool red cap with a Wilco patch on the front. It was white mesh in the back but not "trucker" style. It was the style of a fitted cap, with an elastic band, except the front was red and the back was white mesh. Anyway, I bought it, and it was probably $20 bucks (side note: I later had remorse over spending this on a cap, but I'd had a few drinks, and I like caps). So I bought it and then walked about 10 feet away back to my wife and her friend. A group of college-age just CARTOONISHLY stereotypical hipsters were nearby. I heard one of them who was revolted and said "Oh God, that guy just paid $30 for Wilco trucker hat!" My thoughts at the time were: 1. Wilco is no longer (and wasn't at the time) a "hip" commodity. They are mainstream. I have dug them since they started, but the fact is they are now pretty mainstream. Does some obscure band play at the Ford Center? No. If I were to pull rank here, I'd say I was listening to A.M. when these hipsters literally were getting their asses wiped by their mothers. 2. I had a job at the time, and didn't have kids yet. This is why one works. To get money and sometimes buy a bauble of interest. Was the merch way overpriced? You bet. Welcome to the world of supply and demand. 3. Most importantly, people buying merch contributes to the viability of guys like Jeff Tweedy doing this for a living and the viability of them returning to Oxford. It adds to making it worth their financial while. So they can provide entertainment for filthy hipster dicks like you. Did you buy their shit? No. Did you probably pay for a cheap as hell ticket because you're a student, and I paid for two full-price tickets? Who is ultimately supporting this band?
