Questions on Getting to Oxford and What not to miss while in town |

Hi folks, I'm a converted Ole Miss fan who is making my return trip to the Grove for the Bama game. I currently live in New York City (and am New England
born and bred--sorry folks) but went to college about a six hour drive from Oxford (if you really care where, just ask me. We didn't have D1 football). One
of my fraternity brothers was born and raised in Oxford and is a die hard Rebels fan, so on our senior fall break (2007), we took a trek to his hometown to
watch McFadden and the Hogs do a number on the Rebs. Needless to say, I left Oxford a converted Ole Miss fan (hat and all) and vowed to get back to the Grove
at least every other year. Well, fortunately, my buddy made it happen this year in a big way, as I'll be headed down for the Bama game. I am a big college
football fan, but with little in the way of Northeast options, I've kind of adopted the Rebs as my team and am really looking forward to being on hand for
the October 10th showdown. When I was in Oxford 2 years ago, I was with roughly a dozen fraternity members, so coordinating our activities proved challenging.
Since I'll be with just my one or two buddies this time, I am hoping to do more in the way of Oxford-related exploring. I was wondering if you all had any
advice for what to do while in the area, particularly when it comes to night life and local history. Also, since the game falls on the weekend before Columbus
Day, I have that Monday off of work and since I am in search of the cheapest flights possible, I can afford the luxury of taking a circuitous route (ie:
multiple flights if it saves me a decent amount of money). As such, I was hoping someone here might be able to lend some expertise on travel routes to and from
Oxford. My buddy lives in Memphis now (his family still lives in Oxford) but since I can't fly in until Friday night, it doesn't really matter where I
fly to, just as long as I get to the Grove for game day. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks so much and Go Rebs!

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'. Kurt Vonnegut, Timequake, 1997 |

First, you suck.
Second, you really, really suck. Big time! (Sorry, NAFOOM etiquette dictates) Third, welcome to the fold. I suggest that you get food before arriving in Oxford, because every restaurant worth a damn will have ridiculous wait times that Friday night. As for night life, it's really simple. Just get to the Square as early as you can, then you really can't go wrong on a game weekend. Every one of the 25 or so bars in walking distance will be great. If you want to see something truly unique, find out when UPD is allowing the Grove land rush to begin (usually 11pm or midnight), and head to campus about 30 minutes before that time. You'll get a kick out of watching people scramble like maniacs to get their spot for tailgating the next day. When all the bars close, head to Chevron at 4 Corners (just ask anybody and they'll point it out) and get some grease to coat your booze-filled stomach. You'll be amazed at how entertaining that place can be when filled with drunkasses. Gameday - follow the crowds. After the game, you should look in to flying out from New Orleans. It's a 5 hour drive from Oxford, and you can have a ridiculous good time down there any day of the week. Sunday night should be a lighter night in the French Quarter, especially since the Saints have a bye that week. No alcohol sold in Oxford on Sundays, and the town is almost a ghost town on Sundays after lunch. Send me a message if you have other questions. |

Also, I would recommend going to Taylor Grocery on Sunday. It's usually more laid back than normal and you can drink there.
Your favorite sports team scores a game tying point, you find a dollar in the street, you see someone you hate get their ass kicked in public, all of these blissful moments deserve, nay, demand the most communal of public displays of pleasure: The Landshark. |

You're (your username) is going to experience some turbulence over Fayetteville and Baton Rouge with that tag.
Starkville...you're on your own (and I realize that the Starkghani on Sixpack can ban me but who gives a damn). Just a head's up in case you get ambushed and wonder why someone is very intent upon confronting your posts. It's not you. It's your username. I would apologize but, Sherrill sleeps in the NCAA fishmarket and LSU is LSU no matter how many hurricanes improve the state. Yagotta do what ya gottado. And for you Starkghani law types who want me to yak yak from the secret hideaway message board I have but one message. 6'7 345 4.85 (troll for Bulldog Backer) As far as Sweinsteins are concerned, they are the effluent of the old SWC and at their best no better than something to spread on new lawns. Other than that, welcome to the board. |

all the good restaurants and museums (D-Day, Aquarium) are closed. Especially Monday. Mondays in the French Quarter suck.
