Where does this fall on the impermissible benefits scale, if anywhere at all?
I saw the USC 24/7 post about the Alabama player's rides, and it got me thinking about weird hypothetical situations.
Let's pretend I am a Memphis graduate and a die hard Memphis Tigers fan. I am not a fan of any other NCAA teams and give no support to any other schools. I am also a car salesman for an exotic car dealership. I have done well for myself over the years, and I have socked away some serious cash. I decide to target college athletes who will likely be 1st or 2nd round draft picks, as a new marketing strategy. My plan is to sell them 100K+ cars with all payments deferred until they get their NFL signing bonus. In return, I ask that that they pay me 150%-200% of the car purchase price to mitigate the risk I am taking that they don't make it to the NFL. I cover the note out of my personal funds until they make it to the NFL. I make sure not to include any Memphis players or recruits in my new program. I also make the players sign that they will not transfer to Memphis. In the first year, I get five players to agree to my terms and they play for Alabama, Texas, North Carolina, Ohio State, and Penn State.
What would the NCAA think about someone doing this? For the record, I am not a car salesman, Memphis graduate/fan, or involved in any shady dealings with college athletes. I was just thinking about ways, other than boosters or paying the note themselves, that players could end up cars, and the above example is one that popped up in my head.
